The Crew is Dougie Brimson's first novel, following a series of books on the subject of football hooliganism written with his brother Eddy. Once again, the territory covered relates to the violence that surrounds football. This time, however, things aren't for real--still, the characters and story line seem real enough, especially for those familiar with any of the tales told in the author's factual volumes. Marrying the football violence theme with a well-established genre, Brimson turns his tale into a thriller. Using the master hooligan and the police detective as counterpoints, he weaves a believable and gripping story line, truly guaranteed to keep the pages turning. With the villain of the piece painted black from the word go, the chase is always on. What follows is well thought out, though the ending does not necessarily deliver all the promise of earlier chapters. Perhaps Brimson is just waiting to launch a sequel. Nonetheless, even if a tale of a group of hooligans travelling to watch England in Rome might cut a little close to the bone, The Crew will undoubtedly provide much enjoyment for fans of suspense, albeit in a new context, as well as those whose somewhat more macabre interest has been held by the author's previous books. --Trevor Crowe

79% of climbers had reached the summit that season, and the normal success rate was just 50%. Surely that meant it was a good year to climb Denali?

Foreward: This publication began in 2002 after leaving the regular armed forces and joining the territorial army, prior to this I had done my apprenticeship in football coaching (Soccer skills community coaching scheme) and started the journey to learning the right choices on diet and fitness which prepared me for the army. As a teenager, I had almost no education from the state on dietary advice and exercise apart from run till you drop as an overweight child. My motivation for this was to distribute it online and in disk format to whoever wishes to learn about diet and fitness because of my own journey and applying that knowledge through sports coaching, instruction and volunteering to youth sector, Duke of Edinburgh leadership and the cadet force.

The biggest influence on the refinement of the writing and approach especially towards elite level fitness was from Ranulph Fiennes Fitness book: Fit for life and Alliance computers for working with me to produce the Mini-Cd's (50mb) to distribute to local schools, colleges and clients.

Sports Wales (2005) had a role to play in allowing presentations of the material and building it into a presentation series which is also found on the website (heartsmmedia) Hearts and Minds media who edited the material and presented it into this format for distribution online. YMCA Fitness London for their consultation of the material and their training which helped to form the weight training and circuits exercises.

Despite revisiting the book after 10 years and continuing my journey through sports psychology now I still hope that one more person reached can help their choices for leading a fuller life. And also call for greater changes in legislation on fast food, proper food advice for kids, involvement across generations for community sports.

From 100 meters to the marathon: Inspirational Stories of some of the greatest runners (Just some Motivation)

Running is an incredible feeling in itself, and a great way to stay fit and at your physical best. As far as humans are concerned, running was necessary, in the earlier days, to hunt for food, to fight in the wars, or to deliver messages.

There have been incredible and inspirational runners in the past, like the Greek messenger Pheidippides, who was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, to deliver the message that the Persians had been defeated. (He roughly travelled a distance of 40km, almost the same as a modern day marathon event.)

[Article] The summer of 1981 was indeed a fateful one for several young men who played collegiate summer ball in the Valley Baseball League (VBL) in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. For a trio of players on the New Market Rebels, it was the beginning of a journey that would see them enjoy lengthy major league careers. For three players on the Winchester Royals, Fate had seemingly propped open the door to legitimate dreams of future seasons in the big league sun as well, but 1981 would be the pinnacle of their baseball glory. It was a summer in which the team with Dennis Clow and Steve Peruso and Clay Daniel bested the team with Tom Browning and John Kruk and Dan Pasqua. Clow, Peruso, and Daniel together totaled 11 minor league seasons. Browning, Kruk, and Pasqua each played in the majors for 10 years or more.

Few would have predicted the degree of big league success for the Rebel trio. Browning was almost not allowed to return to the team, Pasqua was briefly dismissed from the team, and John Kruk, well "Johnny" did not fare well when he came up against a broom-stick wielding grandma after he accidentally spit tobacco juice on her carpet.

It was the Winchester Royals, founded by Keith Lupton who would go on to be named the executive of the year three times in three different minor leagues, who were the superior team. Their determination, their ability to stage improbable comebacks, and most of all their talent made the 1981 Winchester Royals one of the great summer league teams ever assembled.

Set as it was against the backdrop of the 1981 major league players' strike, the story of the battle for the President's Cup between the Rebels and the Royals epitomizes that mix of glory and poignancy that produces such passion in those who love the game.

How do you enjoy life when you are cash poor? This question has been on my mind since I was fourteen years old, when my father began to slip into a heavy and prolonged depression after becoming unemployed. As a country man, who had grown up on a remote farm and with very little education, his job prospects were very poor. As is so often the case with people who are unemployed, he developed depression and as a result, a degradation of his physical health quickly ensued resulting in his premature death some years later. The last conversation we had was of how unhealthy modern culture is. We lamented the fact that self-abuse, in most circles, is practically a prerequisite to being popular. He drank himself to death that night.

As the naive guy I was in my teens, I thought I could avoid the misery of unemployment by working hard toward a secure career and one that would be interesting. But, as Murphy's law states: everything that can go wrong will go wrong. By a stroke of unbelievably bad luck, in 2008, just as I was to be setting foot toward a lucrative career, not only did my father die suddenly in his sleep but in the very same year, the worst economic crisis in history hit. My industry was hit particularly heavily and as a result I was unemployed for more than a year.

I was forced to face the issue of unemployment in my early twenties and became evermore obsessed with the question of how life can be enjoyed with very little money. I realised already that having a skilled craft would greatly enhance the enjoyment of everyday life (not to mention employment prospects if it's of that sort) but there was something missing. By my mid-twenties I discovered eastern philosophy and meditation. I spent thousands of hours studying each and found that they complimented the experience of craftsmanship greatly. Soon after, I discovered high performance psychology and the puzzle was virtually complete.

And so it is my aim that by reading this short book, you will learn in the space of one weekend what took me thousands of hours to learn through experience, study and observation.

Craftsmanship as a Way of Life is intended to demonstrate how craftsmanship can be approached from a warm perspective and can act as a catalyst for personal growth.
